Permanent Forum: Creative cities

Recent figures have demonstrated the weight and relevance that culture can have as an element in the development of communities and places. Since the 1990s, several experiences around the world have been looking for ways to exploit this potential. In recent years, there have been many Brazilian cultural departments that have included the term “Creative Economy” in their programs and actions. Understanding how culture, society and economy are related is essential for improving the debate and for creating public policies that are effectively inclusive, emancipatory and that promote the development of cities. The discussion currently takes place in several fields of action, demanding new and more integrated forms of action. On the one hand, there is the idea of “salvation” through culture, with indexes and data demonstrating how economically viable and advantageous cultural actions are.
